The 1955-1957 Thunderbirds are the most recognizable of the breed.  Introduced to compete with the Corvette, the “Baby Birds” offered a similar 2-seat platform but with a more upscale approach.  This car nearly killed the Corvette, as 1955 saw sales of over 16,000 T-birds while the Corvette plummeted to just 700.  Isn’t that amazing?

But enough history; let’s talk about this beautiful 1957 D-code model that includes two tops and Vintage Air.  It was restored from 2007-2008 which included a repaint in its original Gunmetal Gray.  The frame is solid throughout while the outer floor areas have had some light rust repair.  The car includes both a matching porthole hardtop and a white soft top, allowing for three different looks.  Note the hardtop includes a rolling storage rack.  The chrome, trim, bezels, and lenses all look great.  So do the wide whitewall tires on real wire wheels.  There are removeable fender skirts as well.

The D-code 312ci 245hp motor has been rebuilt and runs great.  It wears one of Ford’s most beautiful valve covers as well!  The engine is topped by a square bore Holley carburetor with electric choke along with an electric fuel pump.  Additional work includes a new aluminum radiator and a new fuel tank, while the electrical system was upgraded from a DC generator to a 1-wire alternator (note the external regulator remains in place just for looks).  The Ford-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission was also rebuilt.  Finally, this T-bird is equipped with power steering for easy maneuvering.

The code XA Raven and Colonial (aka black and white) interior is classic Thunderbird.  The soft top stows behind the bench seat, leaving a smooth deck surface with the top down.  The steering wheel has been converted to a smaller 15” setup, making it much easier to get in and out with the wraparound windshield.  Seat belts were also installed.  Other features include a Town & Country radio with upgraded internals and an aux cord in the glove box.  And of course there is the modern Vintage Air unit with R134a air conditioning.  The horn, wipers, lights, and turn signals all work properly.  So do the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, and warning indicators.

This car has a lot to offer.  It is a D-code that has seen a great deal of work and includes two tops, Vintage Air, power steering, and more.  And is there a better looking car from the era?
