Here is a 1966 MGB that really captures the spirit of these indelible roadsters.  It represents an early car with the steel bumpers and classic lines that became blurred in later years.  This example has seen a great amount of restoration work since 2019 including paint, interior, drivetrain, electrical, and more.  It’s a brilliant looking car complete with its BMI Heritage Trust certificate.  And what fun to drive!

This MG was built in late February 1966 and has spent time in Florida and Oklahoma.  It has a remarkably solid body which can be hard to find with these small convertibles.  Originally white, it was sanded down and repainted in red.  It also received a new top, bumpers, body moldings, and a luggage rack.  All seals and window felts were replaced too.   The knockoff wheels are Minators with Goodyear tires from 2020.  A complete set of wire wheels is included as well.

The 1.8L straight-4 engine was completely rebuilt and runs like a champ.  The block was bored 0.020” and received new parts throughout.  The dual SU HS4 carburetors were professionally rebuilt too.  Note the oil cooler just ahead of the radiator.  Continuing down the drivetrain is a fully rebuilt 4-speed manual transmission along with new clutch components.  The fuel, brake, suspension, and steering systems were also refreshed.  The car’s light weight, front disc brakes, and rack and pinion steering all contribute to a rollicking good time!

Looking inside shows a clean and updated interior that also has many new parts including the seat covers, carpet, and door panels.  The switches were replaced along with the seat slides to ensure a stable ride with easy adjustability.  The Lucas electrical system was replaced and uses newer fuses and relays.  All gauges and lights work properly as do the wipers and parking brake.  There is no heater or radio.  The trunk space includes a spare tire and original jack along with a knockoff hammer.

The MGB is one of the best-selling roadsters of all time, and for good reason.  It has an iconic look, is exciting to drive, and is easy to maintain.  The large sales volume and strong following make replacement parts and support easy to obtain.  There are plenty of examples on the market including some at much lower prices, but you definitely get what you pay for; rusting bodies, worn out engines, ratty interiors, sketchy brakes, unreliable electrical systems, etc.  This one takes you right to the finish line with a fantastic look that can’t be beat.
